It was a bright sunny day, with a slight wind coming from the southwest, Maggie (Lana’s 5 lb Chihuahua dog) and I were taking an outside bathroom break…Maggie always waits for me, I have such a small bladder.

We have a large Red Tail Hawk that must have a nest close by because he spends most of his time guarding our house. And today was no exception.

Maggie and I were seperated by about 20 yards when the Hawk took to flight. I noticed it right away and yelled for Maggie…but it was to late. The Hawk had its eye on a big fat meal. I started to run but it did no good. The Hawk swept down and tried to pick me up and carry me away…there was nothing Maggie could do. I call out for Maggie to help but to no avail.

The Hawk grabbed my McGarry Ranch Vest and started to ascend. The clothing sold at The Outlaw Outfitters Store is of such high quality that it would not give. The Hawk struggled but with all my whining, crying and the smell of fear, dropped my vest a flew off to find another meal…another not taster.

So do not worry I am safe.

It was a gorgeous night…if you like the rain and wind..but if this is your first night alive…I mean if this is your birthday…like “0″ years old…you may not have a choice in the weather. I was the first born to my mom but she had me as if it was her fifth.. The first thing I remember was all the people standing around watching, I guess, they wanted to see me do something special..so I did, I had a bowel movement, what? I could have said it another way..

From that day for about three weeks I was “imprinted”, and some of it felt first-class but then some of it wasn’t so good…I mean would you like to have your prostate checked every day? Or have Ron stick his finger in your nose, ears and other places that his finger didn’t belong. Well, me neither…it’s just not right!

The first few years I lived on the Broken Rib Ranch in Arizona. I just when to school, something call the Down Under Training, and play with my friends. The training seem boring but I learned to keep my feet moving…right, left, forward and backward. After a few weeks Ron put something on my back and the ordeal was on… Would you want someone on your back ALL the time? Well, me neither and I tried a number of times to put Ron in the dirt. During this time period I learned a lot of “colorful” language from Ron…my mom did not like for me to repeat what he was saying…

My working life started when Ron and I moved to Rexburg, Idaho, on the McGarry Ranches….Oh, the picture above is Ron and me working cattle on the McGarry Ranches, in Rexburg…

TO BE CONTINUED….

On or about March 4, 20012, Bill Luthy, husband, father, brother, grandfather, friend, rancher, farmer, artist and a real cowboy died. For those guests who got the opportunity to meet and even possibly visit Bill’s museum where he had all his personal creations…paintings, carvings, knifes, mounting, and more…you were blessed. He ran cattle sometimes with the McGarry Ranches and many of the guests got to help with his roundup and gatherings…. McGarry Ranches Cowboys are saying a prayer for Bill and Nila (his wife) and he will never be forgotten.

Many of Bill’s creations are at the ranch for the McGarry Ranches Family to enjoy. In the Bunk House Bathroom Wall are a number of painting depicting cowboy life as it was lived by the Luthy’s and still lived by the McGarry’s. The sculptures located on the TV in the living room of the main house captures cowboy life.

The Luthy Corral is still being used by McGarry Ranches and will continue to be a reminder every time we put a cow through the chute. So Long Partner…Bill. we hope to ride with you again.

So there I was doing all the work..again…riding for the brand. Theron gave me the hardest job…bring the rank cows up the alley way to the turn-around and into the shute…yu’ll know me and no matter how hard the job I never whine just do the outstanding job that you all have come to expect.

Well, Blue 78 a baldy face black angus did not want to go with the rest of the girls to get a new tag and her yearly physical. She ran back on me twice and then tried to jump the fence. Being the company man that I am, I decided to keep her from jumping and destroying the fence… This might not have been my best idea.

I knew that my cowboy reputation and huge status would keep any cow from coming close, so I sat on the fence that Blue 78 was trying to jump. The fence is about a five or six foot fence so when I saw Blue 78 on a dead run from the other end of the alleyway I wasn’t worried…She jumped hit me and I was thrown into the air and landed on the frozen ground…later I learned that I also managed to hit the cement water trough….

As I was flying through the air, I remember Derk Morton, who is famous for his cowboy wisdom said,…”Well, that was stupid”….and had I been conscious after I hit the ground, I would have thanked him for his keen observation. Don’t you hate someone that calls things as he sees them?

A perfect landing in the alleyway that the finished cows were using to return back to pen number one…Derk and Lana couldn’t get me out of the stampede without pushing the cows harder and causing me more harm, so,……they went to lunch…just kidding, but I know they thought about it. Shane Clark was working close by, jumped the fence and pulled me, unconscious (I was unconscious not Shawn…although there have been many times I have wondered), out of the harm’s way.

The cows cleared, and Shawn, Derk and Lana in attendance, I was removed from the ground. I remember Shawn or Derk saying “just lay there” but I knew there was work to do….I jumped up, (well that may be a slight exaggeration but then us legendary cowboys often take some literately license.) Derk carried me out of the alleyway through the barn and helped Lana get me to the truck with some of his cowboy wisdom, he said…”you might as well take one of the nipple from the calf shed ’cause he is go’na milk this for about a year!” Derk laughed his laugh… It hurt for me to laugh but pain was my middle name and you all know Derk is really funny.

Lana managed to hit every pot hole on the way to the hospital…The emergency room doctor’s first statement was “you have the body of an eighteen year old, I am very impressed”. I then knew the doctor was highly education and knew of what he talked. I tried to puff up but the three broken ribs and the concussion were getting in the way of my sense of humor. The doctor gave me some pain medication but refused to keep me in the hospital for the next two years as Lana requested. After a heated discussion between Lana and the doctor, the doctor pacified her with her very own drugs to take when things got bad. She immediately took the drugs and I drove her home and put her to bed.

I’m still on the way to recovery and in about six weeks should be back in the saddle. love to all-the real cowboy …ron

Sabine Joyce has been coming to the McGarry Ranches for a number of years. She loves to ride and is a great help in the mountain moving the cattle. She lives in Davidsonville, Md. and she is a Pocillovis!!! Don’t pretend that you know what that is….even I didn”t know that it meant a person that collects egg cups. And I know Everything!

Sabine has one the few and largest Antique Egg Cup Collections in the United States. She recently said that, “That there are two things I collect: horses and egg cups. I started collecting egg cups 20 years ago. No one wanted them anymore.” Sabine will eat as many a three eggs a day and it has become a ritual. Here is the trick….

Fresh eggs (she has free roaming chicken and real fresh eggs). The first step in preparing each egg is to break the air bubble on the inside of the egg’s round bottom, and Joyce has a special gadget she uses for that. The eggs are then placed in boiling water for4 exactly four minutes so they come out perfectly soft-boiled. The eggs are put into a bath of cold water for a few minutes to make the shells easier to crack. Then they go into a special egg cozy to keep them warm while Joyce chooses egg cups-her preference is one of fine aristocratic porcelain.

Guests are invited to choose whichever egg cup they’d like to use. Once seated at the table, you are invited to selected an egg from the egg cozy and place it in your egg cup. The top of the egg is then sliced off, or “beheaded”, by an “egg decapitator”-a special pair of scissors designed for this purpose. If you like salt and or pepper and you have the meal!

It’s been a hard year for Sammy the Cow Dog…broken leg from being stepped on by cow…kicked in the face too many times to mention…But Lana has had a better year, work, work, work, and no injuries.

Both Lana and Sammy went on the drive home. The two of them worked “drag” and the “flanks” so that the cows all made it home without loosing any. We had a guest come from Tenn. for the first time ever. You can see the pictures of the drive on Facebook…McGarry Ranches…2011 Drive Home.

We had trucked the calves, the older cows, the bulls, and any other cows that would not stay on the lease. So we only had around 400 or so to drive home. It’s was a great day as far as the weather…sun shinning, in the 40′s, and no wind…clear sky.

The Sheriff’s Department blocked Interstate 20 for us and we moved the cattle across in about 10 minutes. Cars were backup and people stood by the side of the road to watch…hoping the cowboys would loose a cow or two and have to “round ‘em ” up!
